Next time your boyfriend gives you a Swiffer for your birthday or your Tinder date demands you Venmo him for that beer, don’t expect the old “men are men, they’re just not that romantic” philosophy to explain it. According to science—specifically, Dr. Gwendolyn Seidman over on Psychology Today—that’s just not true. Men are actually more romantic than women, she says.

To illustrate her point, Dr. Seidman points to a web of research debunking the gender-biased notion. Among her references: studies that men score higher on the Romantic Beliefs Scale (yes, a real thing) than women do, are more likely to believe in love at first sight, and report greater happiness upon hearing the words “I love you” for the first time. Plus, men also place more emphasis on feeling passion in their relationships than women do. It’s all very interesting, yes, but it might also be useful—bookmark the page now, and you'll have something to point to when you're tired of the stereotype that we’re “supposed” to be more lovey-dovey, sappy, and sweet than men. Science disagrees, people. SCIENCE.
