Sac State hosts SSIS major fair

Students walking past the Hornet bookstore may have noticed the social science and interdisciplinary science major fair.

The event was informational for students interested in SSIS majors, such as psychology, political science, liberal arts, sociology, anthropology and gerontology.

This is the first time SSIS has offered such an event to students interested in one of the 10 departments and three programs that offer degrees.

"This is part of the Week of Welcome events," said Orn Bodvarsson, dean of the college of SSIS. "The major fair is here to provide information to the students from the faculty, staff and students within the department."

Dean, staff and students from the department were available to answer any questions about a degree or certain program offered.

"Within the past few years gerontology has grown; we have over 200 students in the major," said Laura Emerson, gerontology program coordinator.

Along with the SSIS department, there were two student-based groups present at the event.

"The goal of the fair today was to raise awareness of all the programs, from small to large, and reach out to about 300 students," said Derek Bevers, who works within SSIS.

Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in psychology, was seeking out students who are majoring in psychology with at least 9 units and a minimum 3.3 GPA.

"Each spring we host the Case of Psych event that showcases what you can do as a psych major," said Isabella Serrato, chapter president of Sacramento State's Psi Chi.

The other student group out in the plaza today was the Psychology Society. This group is a social-based club for students interested in the field of psychology.

"This semester we are promoting our Harvest Festival, which is a safe place for families to have fun and go trick-or-treating on campus this Halloween," said Kayla Simmons, a senior psychology major.
