A Royal Commission has heard notorious pedophile Shannon McCoole bragged about lying to pass a psychology test to get a job at Families South Australia.

Families is part of the Department for Education and Child Development, and the convicted child abuser reportedly said that he fooled them by telling them what they wanted to hear.

McCoole, an employee from 2010 to 2014, is serving jail time for sexually abused six young children in his care.

The assistant director told the Royal Commission that McCoole bragged about how he lied his way through the recruitment psychology test.

"He said he lied through it...he said he fooled them ‘cos he was still there."

The witness said she complained to the director, her boss, when she saw McCoole sitting with a young child in between his legs.

"She [the director] told him to get up...it was inappropriate...he just thought it was funny,” she said.

But other times she felt like her boss brushed off her complaints.

"It was hard for me because they were friends,” the witness said, telling the commission the pair played netball together outside of work.

She said she told the director "if you don't get rid of him it's going to come back and bite you on the bum”.

The emotional witness burst into tears when she told the commission that she should’ve done more.

McCoole apparently developed a friendship with the centre's director, who didn't believe the charges at first. Photo: 7News

When asked why she didn’t complain to the agency, she replied: "I'm asking myself that a hundred times. We should have. I should have... We didn't do the right thing."

The school-care director allegedly didn’t believe the charges against McCoole when he was first suspended.

"I just thought he had upset somebody, a colleague," she said.

When questioned the director couldn't recall most of the complaints and she denied their friendship impaired her judgment.

The witness said she knew there was something odd about McCoole and wasn’t surprised when he was arrested.
