Research looks into pop culture impact on justice

The impact pop culture forensic science has on our justice system is the subject of new research coming out of Canterbury University.

Doctor Heather Wolffram is looking into the psychology of juries, and what impact forensic evidence means for the integrity of our justice system.

She says television shows like CSI, Criminal Minds and Silent Witness portray forensic evidence as being able to provide 100 percent certainty of guilt or innocence.

"Whether it's having an impact on actual verdicts at the moment is a little bit unclear but it's definitely something that defence lawyers and the Crown are a little bit concerned about.

"Juries tend to believe given what they in popular culture at the moment that forensics is sort of a magic bullet I suppose."

Preliminary results from the research are expected later this year.
