About the role:

We are seeking a dynamic research associate with a track record of academic excellence and a passion for Applied Cognition/Human Factors research. The project is an Australian Research Council funded project entitled" Optimising the balance between task automation and human manual control" led by Associate Professor Shayne Loft (2016-2018).

The appointee will, under limited direction, be responsible for helping to design, execute, and disseminate high quality research, in the Human Factors and Applied Cognition Laboratory, directed by Associate Professor Shayne Loft. The appointee will conduct research using simulations of submarine track management and air traffic control, in laboratory and field settings, that draw upon psychology and human factors to discover how best to design automation to maximise performance, whilst ensuring that human operators maintain the task awareness required to manually control previously automated tasks.

The Human Factors and Applied Cognition Laboratory houses an air traffic control simulator, submarine track management simulator, driving simulator and a variety of other basic and applied tasks, including an eye tracker and physiological recording equipment.

To be considered for this role, you will have:

  • Relevant PhD qualification in experimental, cognitive, or human factors (ergonomics) psychology, or a closely related discipline;
  • Highly developed written and verbal communication skills including evidence of high quality written work;
  • Evidence of academic productivity (e.g. quality peer-reviewed publications, awards etc)'
  • Knowledge/research experience of Human Factors topics such as Automation, Situation Awareness, Workload, Attention/Multi-tasking, Expertise, and Decision-Making;
  • Skills in statistical analyses;
  • Track record of using initiative and working in professional manner;
  • Ability to build relationships and work in a research team;
  • Willingness and ability to supervise Honours and Masters students
