Reassigned Arundel High teacher back in class

Andrew Cizek, who teaches Advanced Placement psychology and government, returned to class Tuesday.

A letter went home Tuesday and Wednesday telling students and parents that Cizek had resumed teaching at the Gambrills school, said county schools spokesman Bob Mosier.

He could not comment further on the case because of privacy laws that bar him from discussing personnel matters, he said.

Dozens of parents and students, as well as some of Cizek’s colleagues, protested his reassignment last month, saying he was wrongly investigated due to his use of a popular social media site.

At issue, they said, were messages in which a female student referred to herself as the teacher’s girlfriend. The girl has apologized and stated that nothing inappropriate was going on, they said.

Cizek’s Twitter page, which has not had any new posts since mid-February, indicates that the teacher apparently used Twitter for both personal messages and communications with students.

Cizek’s Twitter page has a message referring to the female student: “For my birthday, I also got stood up ... So much for prom.”

There is no school system policy on teacher use of social media.

“I’m ready to put the investigation behind me, and am thrilled to be back at Arundel High School to get the students ready for their AP tests in May,” Cizek said in an email to The Capital this morning.

“I was in awe of the support I received from the Arundel community during my reassignment,” he wrote. “The parents, students, staff, and administration’s words and actions on my behalf continue to leave me in awe. I’m incredibly honored.”

A letter from Arundel High Principal Sharon Stratton praised the help given by other instructors to help fill the gaps caused by Cizek’s reassignment.

“I want to remind you that the investigation that was conducted by our school system is a personnel matter. As such, I am unable to discuss any specifics,” she wrote.

“It is my hope that the remainder of the school year will be one without any interruptions to our normal instructional schedule. I urge everyone to focus on what lies ahead.”
