Psychology professor appointed to endowed chair

Psychology professor Kristin Flora has been appointed to serve as the Roscoe W. Payne Chair in philosophy and psychology.

The endowed fund, used as a memorial for Payne, generates income to provide support for supplemental programing to enhance student learning in psychology.

Flora will select and implement this programming in her new chair position.

The endowment comes from Payne, who graduated from Franklin College in 1893. He practiced medicine in Franklin from 1896 until his death in 1930. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta and the Masonic Lodge.

Payne’s brother, Carl F. Payne, also graduated from Franklin College and became a physician. When he died in 1935, he left his estate in a trust fund, providing income to his widow, then his siblings upon her death.

When the last sibling died, the estate was transferred to Franklin College to endow the chair.

Flora has taught psychology at the college since 2007 and became the department chair in 2009.

She received her bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University and her master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Prior to coming to Franklin, Flora worked as a clinical outcomes analyst and research coordinator for the Department of Neuroscience/Orthopedics at ProHEALTH Care in Waukesha, Wisconsin.
