NEW DELHI: Studying psychology doesn't mean that you'll learn how to read people's minds or faces. That it does is, apparently, the most abiding myth about the subject, feels Kanika Ahuja, teacher at Lady Shri Ram College. "The subject has high applicability and the student opting for it must display empathy and be capable of introspection," says Ahuja.

Eligibility: Only 11 colleges in DU teach psychology and six of these are women's only. The cutoff is usually 95% and above in Daulat Ram, Gargi, Indraprastha, Kamala Nehru, Lady Shri Ram and Vivekananda. Not having studied it in classes XI and XII will invite docking of 2.5% from aggregate.

Course content: Psychology is application-based with several papers including a practical component. There are papers on statistical and physiological psychology (brain and behaviour). "You understand things like prejudice, discrimination, road rage," says Ahuja.

Road ahead: Ahuja explains that psychology "offers a clear-cut career trajectory". A combination of industrial/organizational psychology and HR management trains you for work. Many join HR departments right after college.
