Even before September ends, Halloween decorations and merchandise begin popping up in local stores. Scary movies begin playing on ABC Family and shows like American Horror Story and the Walking Dead return to our screens.
But what makes the culture so alluring that even children get involved with the holiday through trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving and scarecrow making?
