Psychology: Mentoring makes a difference

Despite another spate with winter weather earlier this week, there is reason for hope as baseball’s opening day is on the horizon. And a new bipartisan effort to encourage mentoring of young people of color with absent parenting has the potential to be a home run.


Leaders recently gathered to launch an initiative to encourage civic involvement in helping young people of color make their way through the difficulties of adolescence. It is during this critical developmental time when many teenagers seem to lose their way. This is particularly true for males who tend to do more poorly in school and get involved with drugs, alcohol and criminal activity when they do not have adult mentoring present.
