ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Farooq H Naek has stressed psychologists of the country to come forward and assist the government and society for promotion of healthy and tolerant attitudes and for solving social problems.

“We should try to eliminate extremism and non-tolerant behaviour from society, as healthy mind promotes healthy society, application of psychological knowledge to solve social issues has become all the more meaningful and relevant today,” Naek said.

He was expressing these views while addressing as chief guest at the inaugural session of the 13th National Psychology Conference on the theme of ‘Psychology Need of the Time’ at Islamic International University on Friday.

The conference was organised by the Pakistan Psychological Association (PPA) in collaboration with IIUI Department of Psychology. PPA organising committee Chairman Riaz Fatyana presided over the ceremony. IIUI faculty of Social Sciences Dean Dr Nabi Baksh Jumani, faculty members, administrative officers and a large number of students also attended the conference.

The two-day conference has eight scientific sessions and 50 research papers will be presented on wide ranging issues, like extremism, disaster management, psychological assistance to people with disabilities and human resource management, etc. Fatyana appreciated the organisers for choosing the most pertinent theme, which highlights importance of psychology in dealing with prevailing psychosomatic and social behavioural issues in society.

Naek added that social, political and economic injustices, human rights violation and other psycho-social stresses of daily life are major contributing factors behind all the major social disorders. Lack of facilities for mental health awareness has led to increasing the rate of suicide attempts, aggression, terrorism and global frustration in developing countries. He said there is a great need of psychologists in the country to address the impacts of natural, man-made and other disasters on the mind of the people, through counselling and psychotherapeutic intervention.

Riaz Fatyana said the purpose of holding this conference is to encourage the researchers in this field and to highlight the professional activities of the people. He said that organising committee will continue to hold such events and in coming years it will organise such kinds of conferences at international level. Dr Nabi Baksh Jumani said that psychology covers the entire life of human being and through advance research in this area we can solve everyday problems. He said that a psychiatrist can guide students better according to the trend, not only in future planning but also in everyday problems.
