Psychologist: Too much sex ed too soon bad for kids’ brains

A SUNSHINE Coast psychologist has warned too much, too soon is dangerous when it comes to sex education and children.

Flourish Psychology's Dr Gemma Roux said it was important not to overwhelm children with a lot of information.

"They don't have the cognitive and emotional capacity to process this yet," she said.

This included children in Year 7 - the target age for one of the programs being offered by the Safe Schools Coalition.

It's All of Us program is billed as an "education resource that supports "gender diversity, sexual diversity and intersex topics".

The roll out of the Coalition's programs is being petitioned against in Queensland schools by the Australian Christian Lobby.

Dr Roux said sex education was important, but in the early years one should stick to the basics.

"From a developmental perspective, it becomes confusing for kids," she said.

"Protecting their innocence is so important."
