Professor fuses science with nail polish

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

You might see Dr. Erin Buchanan teaching statistical and research psychology at Missouri State University, or find her tucked away in her office, working on a scientific paper, surrounded by her psychology texts, degrees, and awards for her research.

Either way, the colorful personality of this recently tenured associate professor is hard to miss.

"I'm big in my science area but I'm also known for my high heels and being very girly," says Buchanan.

Buchanan is also the founder of Parallax Polish.

"It's like almost a mini science experiment," says Buchanan.

She makes her own polishes at home, and sells them online.

"I love glitter, so being covered in glitter is never a bad thing," she quips.

"Sometimes you'll mix colors and expect it to look good and you're like oh that's brown, that's not what I wanted at all," says Buchanan, who also pairs her product with information about science for her customers to follow through social media.

The colors are inspired by famous women in science.

"What I'm hoping to accomplish is get conversations started, so I have this color and somebody goes 'hey, I really like that color, what is that about?' Well let me tell you about this woman that this is designed based off of," explains Buchanan.

Erin wants to make sure girls know you can be a serious scientist and enjoy girly things at the same time.

"You know, people aren't one thing at a time, they're lots of things at once," says Buchanan.
