Professor Broida’s teachings, legacy live on through online course

Although Psychology Professor John Broida lost his battle with pancreatic cancer this past September, students his online Psych 101 course continue to reap the benefits of his teaching.

The Portland Press Herald tells the story of Professor Broida's efforts to make sure the online course would go on as planned so the class consisting of 90 students would not be canceled. Professor Broida continued working on the course and interacting with students until he passed away.

"Really, it's what kept him alive. He didn't let the cancer get him," said AnneMarie Catanzano, Professor Broida's wife, in the piece.

An early adopter of online teaching, Professor Broida began taping and broadcasting his lectures all over the state in 1988, according to the piece. His goal was to provide increased access to students who may not be able to participate in the "traditional" college experience.

"He liked the idea of getting it out to nontraditional students," added Catanzano.

"Working with students was his life. End of story ... that was him," said Michael Stevenson, USM professor of Psychology. Professor Broida hand-picked Professor Stevenson to look after his class.
