Open day will help families look after children’s mental health

The Greenwood Institute of Child Health, within the University of Leicester’s School of Psychology, will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a series of short public talks.

The Greenwood Institute is a centre for teaching and research around child mental health issues. Some of its staff also work for the NHS clinical services and offer mental health services to young people.

The open day, due to be held on Friday, June 28, will feature a series of presentations by young people, parents and researchers, which aim to help families and young people deal with issues around mental health and illness.

A key presentation will be given by Nilesh Chauhan, a pupil at Judgemeadow Community College, Leicester, who will talk about what his winning poster on ‘What is good mental health?’

The Greenwood Institute recently carried out a research project at the school, and Nilesh was the winner of their mental health-themed poster competition run by the centre.

Parent Duncan Collins will speak on his experience of the needs of adopted children, and Elaine Liquorish – who has a child with autism – will speak about children with autism and developmental needs. Both families have been involved with recent research projects run by the centre.

Marie Bush, a teacher at Judgemeadow Community College, and Professor Nisha Dogra, a Professor of Psychiatry Education School of Psychology, will speak on child mental health promotion.

Frances Nicol, a longstanding friend of the centre, will give a talk on ‘Every child matters: But for how long?’ Mrs Nicol was the wife of Professor Rory Nicol, the original Director of the Greenwood Institute, and recently donated a mural to the centre for the children to enjoy.

In addition, Professor Panos Vostanis, Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Leicester’s School of Psychology, will give an overview of the last 20 years of the Greenwood Institute.

The day will also feature the launch of the Greenwood prize, on-site entertainment, posters to view and freebies.

Professor Panos Vostanis said: “We really wanted the anniversary to be a chance to let young people and parents talk about the issues that are important to them.

“It will be really good to celebrate all the work that has been done at the Greenwood Institute of Child Health over the last 20 years.”

The event will be held on Friday, June 28 from 11am to 2pm at the Greenwood Institute, Westcotes House, Westcotes Drive, LE3 0QU.
