Does old school Psychology work with today’s psychological disorders? Let me first give you my definition of “old school’ psychology”; in my mind that’s exactly like the first psychiatrist I saw in Sarasota, Florida. Who was it? Due to the potential risk for defamation, violation of his privacy, I will only say he was a 60 year old (now 78) so-called mental health expert and psychiatrist who specializes in psychiatry. “The DOCTOR” is licensed to practice in one other southern state and one state near the Great Lakes and yes, He practices psychiatry the old school way here in Florida.
Throwing Pills At The Problem
I met “The DOCTOR” at (undisclosed) Health Services provider in Sarasota. I had seen him all of 15 minutes when he prescribed me 3 different medications and gave me an official diagnosis of Major Depression… over the course of six months I would get less then 4 hours of face-time with “The DOCTOR” but I would get many more changes to my Psychological Disorders diagnosis that were all verbal (I’ve never seen him write anything except the medications’ scripts) from Major Depression to Bipolar one, Bipolar two, Bipolar rapid cycling, and to Bipolar mix state then just back to Bipolar II. (Hey, when You’re sick and trying to get help to get better…You figure a seemingly qualified doctor should know what they’re talking about…right?!)
I never felt like he even knew me…since at every appointment, I would have to remind him who I was and what medications he gave me. One time, after I flipped out into a manic psychotic episode that had my wife fleeing for her life with the kids (back on June 25, 2004 – I remember this date because I burned it into my arm)…the episode was because of a wrong dosage of meds… (for further context on SI see: Part 2: Caregiving Coping with Disturbing Behavior: Non-Suicidal Self-Injury: 3 Tips!)
Wishy-Washy Diagnosis Leads to Free Ride in Police Car
This had the cops at my door steps 3 times, finally led to me being hand-cuffed in the back of a squad car. The officer was very polite as we drove off. He told me to voluntarily admit myself to the CSU (crisis stabilization unit) or he would take me to jail then Baker Act me. I took option 1… Good thing because it turned out…Good ‘ol old school Psychologogy “The DOCTOR” who kept changing my psychological disorders and medications… Actually over medicated one of my meds by 300 mg and under medicated me on another by 800 mg! This was why I flipped out, started hearing voices, started making threats and almost killed myself. Not all psychological disorders need medications!
No Where to Go Except Out Of My Mind
I wish I could mention “The DOCTOR” by name along with the (undisclosed) Health Services but I do NOT endorse them whatsoever, their lack of professionalism was detrimental to the recovery of many of my fellow peers and for me personally. In 2004, at a time of great personal need this mental health services black-listed and REJECTED me for no good reason! I begged “The DOCTOR” to help me yet, he treated me like a leper. What was my crime?? Out of the kindness of my heart, i helped him for free with some marketing. After I spent my own money and put in twice the amount of time that I told him I could do for free, the owner of (undisclosed) Health Services started calling me every day with updates and changes to the point that I told him, just take all the marketing work, etc. and have his paid employees take it from there and keep all my free work and labor. He did not like that and literally labeled my health file with an orange sticker that said: “trouble maker” and black listed me. So, for a good deed I was rejected mental health services!
To the Looney Bin or to Jail?
I only went there because at the time there was nothing else for mental health services if you did not have insurance. I tried to file a claim with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). But I was told the then owner of (undisclosed) Health Services already had a claim filed and his business license revoked and that I would have to file in Georgia. Yes, this is all hearsay and I never kept the records to prove all of this, but I just wanted you to understand why I feel the way I do about ”The DOCTOR” and any doctor that thinks medication is the first step even before you get a proper diagnosis. NO! the Psychology of Old school thinking of just tossing medications at Psychological Disorders is the way to cure things…does NOT WORK!
