Sunisha Norris was recently inducted into the Psi Chi International Honor Society at N.C. AT State University, where she was also granted lifetime membership into the society.

“In recognition of Outstanding Scholastic Achievement and Excellence, and in compliance with all the requirements of the Constitution and Statutes pertaining to membership, Sunisha Norris is granted Lifetime Membership in Psi Chi,” documents from AT showed.

Psi Chi is the International Honor Society in Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purpose of encouraging, stimulating and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology. Membership is open to graduate and undergraduate men and women who are making the study of psychology one of their major interests, and who meet the minimum qualifications which are, for AT’s Chapter, a 3.2 GPA in their psychology courses and a 3.0 overall GPA.

Psi Chi serves two major goals — one immediate and visibly rewarding to the individual member, the other slower and more difficult to accomplish, but offering greater rewards in the long run. The first of these is the Society’s obligation to provide academic recognition to its inductees by the mere fact of membership. Psi Chi has a psychology network without equal, spreading to over 1,000 campuses throughout the world.

Psi Chi awards numerous grants of up to $1,500 for academic year research projects and $5,000 grants for summer research projects.

Norris is the daughter of Connie and William Parker Jr. of Hope Mills and Earnest Norris of Fayetteville, and the granddaughter of Barbra Monk of Salemburg.

Lifelong mentors to Sunisha are New Light AME Zion church family, godmother Carolyn and Gregory Monk of Clinton, godfather, Arnold Lynn and Debra Monk of Salemburg; grandfather, Frank and Helen Arnette of Salemburg and great aunt, pastor Laura Jean Sutton of Salemburg, and Saddie Newkirk of Roseboro.

Norris said she would also like to pay special thanks to Mrs. Kim Hobbs, former principal at Lakewood High School, and science teacher Mrs. Grady for “their constant academic mentorship” during her tenure at LHS.

She is currently a psychology major with a minor in child development and family studies at AT. Norris is currently conducting her internship with Reading Connection in Greensboro.

Because of her love of children, she currently works part-time at Rankin Elementary School in Greensboro and with the Autism Society of N.C. in Greensboro.

Norris has made the Dean’s List for three consecutive semesters, receiving a Certificate of Achievement from NC AT University. She continues to maintain a 3.5 GPA.
