Duckworth speaks at psychology school commencement

In her remarks at the commencement of Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology in Newton, June 2 in Boston, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, D-Illinois, the Iraq war hero who lost her legs when the helicopter she piloted was struck by an rocket-propelled grenade, thanked the graduates for dedicating their careers to serving those who need mental health care, because “their wounds are not readily seen or easily treated.”

Duckworth cautioned the MSPP graduates that whatever aspect of mental health they specialize in, their careers will likely involve treating those whose lives have been affected by military service — from the child of an active duty service person to a veteran from the Vietnam era, or before, who may eventually be in hospice.

During the commencement, Duckworth was awarded an Honorary doctor of humane letters by the school’s president, Nicholas Covino, she was introduced at the event by State Attorney General Martha Coakley.
