Newman High School December Student of the Month: Olivia Walter

What scares you? The unknown; it always has and probably always will.

What's something about you that nobody knows? I hate hospitals. The smell, the atmosphere, the entire thing just freaks me out. I know it's a wonderful place, it's just every time I go, I get queasy.

If you could ask President Obama any question, what would it be? If someone would have come up to you when you were a teenager and told you that you would become president someday, would you have believed them or laughed in their face?

If you could try any job for a day, what would it be? A special effects makeup artist. I can't do makeup to save my life, but transforming a person into a creature with just your pure talent, that would be so cool.

If you could go anywhere in the world for free, where would it be?New Zealand. It is such a gorgeous place, and I have always wanted to go there. I actually used to want to move there when I was older for a while, but I love the snow too much to leave it.

What is the last good book you read? "Stolen" by Lucy Christopher. It's a true account of a girl who was kidnapped and taken to the Outback and had to survive on her own with her kidnapper. She was conflicted because she started to care for the man who took her, but also knew he was mentally ill. I love true stories, but especially ones having to do with the law. (Murder, kidnappings, and anything having to do with a subject that isn't quite an appropriate topic of discussion.)

What is your proudest moment? I am most proud of my academic awards, and the recognition I have received in the past 4 years. I am the first in my family to have straight A's, to be in National Honor Society, and to be student of the month. It means the world to me to finally see all my hard work pay off, and to realize it all was for something, not nothing.

Who is your role model? My grandma Hermes. She has always been there for me, and has shown me how to become a graceful, intelligent and opinionated young woman. She has been through so much in life and has managed to still come on top; while being an example of how I should lead a good Catholic life. She is the strongest warrior in my life, and without her I would be lost. I love you, Grandma.

Is there anything else you want people to know about you? I have three nieces and two nephews. And I have an odd talent of being able to spit long distances.

Is there someone you'd like to send a shout out to?To my family, for always being there for me. And to everyone who has supported me in life and has wanted to see me succeed. I hope I am making all of those people proud.
