MANY people laugh at the thought of forming a New Year's resolution but Paul Grant of Gladstone Psychology Services says there is a very serious and important side to making change.

"A lot of people joke about resolutions when in fact they are very positive," Grant said.

"Particularly in the way of behavioural changes, whether it be quitting smoking or getting fit.

"People find them such a joke due to the statistics which highlight how rarely they are achieved, but if followed through there are great results."

When it comes to failure though Grant said to not give up.

"One way to achieve the resolution is to set the same one each year," he said.

"Smokers never quit on the first attempt, or the second and very rarely the third. But it does get easier and you just have to stick to it."

Grant said there are a number of things you can do to stick to your resolution.

"Set specific goals; make a plan and strategy to monitor your progress."
