DENVER - Summer may be a few days away but the Pop Psychology tour brought a taste of the season to the Ogden Theatre Tuesday.
Featuring opening acts like Smallpools from California, all that was missing from their set was the sand. Their laid-back poppy sound is perfect for beach-day rendezvous. Plus they were attire-ready, with almost every member sporting some type of floral print.
Then came the party. Any act that begins with a curtain covering the main stage has a lot to live up to. And when that curtain came crashing down - Neon Trees came out in full force.
Sporting yellow heart-shaped glasses, a neon jacket paired with a maroon suit, lead singer Tyler Glenn was there to put on a show. And let everyone in on the stories behind the songs.
"21st Century Love" is an ode to the disdain and pitfalls of online dating. "Why can't I just hold someones hand?" asked Glenn.
He also wasn't about to let anyone get away with not having a good time. Just a few songs into the set he stopped the show, to the bewilderment of his band members.
Like a good friend determined not to let you be a wallflower, Glenn made clear that you were either there to dance - or go home.
With powerhouse vocals and an undeniable stage presence - Glenn won that battle.
"I was born in 1983," he told the crowd, "this song [1983] reminds me of being young, so let's be young tonight."
As the set wrapped up, Glenn shared his most personal story: coming out as gay.
Determined to help others, he encouraged everyone to "come out" and be true to themselves - in whatever facet that may be.
