Agent named insurance person of distinction

NBT-Mang Insurance Agency announced that Pat Giblin was named the 2015 Insurance Person of Distinction by the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Greater Binghamton.

Recipients of this award are chosen by the Board of Directors for the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Greater Binghamton. Considerations include the recipient’s time in the insurance industry, their efforts, and their dedication.

“This award recognizes Pat’s extremely successful career in the insurance industry over the past 20 years,” said George Busch, vice president of sales of NBT-Mang Insurance Agency. “It is a privilege to be able to announce this achievement.”

Professor reappointed psychology liaison

SUNY Broome Professor Bill Altman, of the Psychology Human Services Department, has been reappointed to a second three-year term as the official liaison between the Society for the Teaching of Psychology, a division of the American Psychological Association, and the National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology. In this position, Dr. Altman will continue to develop STP-sponsored programs for the National Institute for the Teaching of Psychology.

United Methodist Homes names new director of development

Ann Highfield-Lomonaco is the new director of development at United Methodist Homes. Before joining United Methodist Homes, she had been director of volunteer services at Lourdes Hospital since 2007.

Prior to that, her experience includes three years as education coordinator at the Broome County Health Department and three years as director of the local division of the American Heart Association where she managed fundraising activities and special events.

Lomonaco is a graduate of Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa. She earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration and psychology with a concentration in hospital administration.

"We're pleased that Ann has joined the United Methodist Homes family,” Kristen Oleary, vice president of sales and marketing, said. “There will be many opportunities for her to put her development skills to work as we move forward in the coming year.”

Financial advisor celebrates 25 years

Northwestern Mutual announced that Michael Wardell will celebrate his 25th anniversary as a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual in Binghamton.

Wardell joined Northwestern Mutual in 1990 as a financial representative. He is part of a network of specialists offering a wide array of products, expert guidance and innovative solutions to a variety of needs and goals.

Wardell has earned the National Quality Award, qualified for the Million Dollar Round Table and holds the Chartered Life Underwriter, CLU and Chartered Financial Consultant, ChFC designations.

Wardell is a native of Binghamton. He received a bachelor of science degree in management from Ithaca College in 1990.

He currently lives in Port Crane with his fiancée Cheryl. Together they have six sons: Ryan, Justin, Tanner, Elijah, Hunter and Levi.

Local instructor presents at conference

Dr. Carolyn T. Amory, an adjunct instructor in English at SUNY Broome, presented at the Dante and Music conference at the University of Pennsylvania, held in honor of Dante Alighieri’s 750th birthday.

Dr. Amory’s paper, “Vita Nuova and Operatic Form,” discussed how Dante’s Vita Nuova pattern of description and poem was adopted into the pattern of recitative and aria used in the first opera.

It will be published by UPenn in Conference Proceedings.

Amory holds her B.A. in music, M.A. in Italian Letters and Literature, and Ph.D. in Comparative Literatures, all from Binghamton University. She was associated with Tri-Cities Opera for 33 years and has taught voice, Italian, Comparative Literatures, and English.
