Mentalist drives blindfolded through Billings car lot

BILLINGS - The Mentalist is a hit CBS TV show that features a character by the name of Patrick Jane who helps solve crimes using his razor sharp skills of observation.

And this week in Billings we have our very own mentalist right here in town. Craig Karges may not be Patrick Jane, but he does have his own skill set.

"It's just a mix of a lot of thing," Karges explained. "It's one part magic and illusion, it's one part psychology and it's one part intuition. So it's those three things that make up the stage show that I do."

Throughout his career Karges has appeared on talk shows like Jay Leno and Larry King Live.

In addition to his one-man show "Experience the Extraordinary" Karges also drives blindfolded. A stunt he performed at the Billings Volkswagen dealership Thursday afternoon.

"Part of it's based on memory and timing and intuition," Karges disclosed. "I run the course ahead of time."

Karges is not only blindfolded, he also wears a hood over his to head to ensure there is no way he can see what lies ahead. Although, the mentalist admits there is a method involved.

"There's a counting process that I do sometimes while I'm going through it, that's what I do in the practice," explained Karges. "That's what I'm recalling as I'm going through it."

Yes, he has a few memory tricks, but he also threw in a few obstacles.

While he drove up and down the car lot, one car was removed from a parking spot and it was Karges' job to find it. And sure enough, he did.

But it wasn't a flawless run, after all this was the first time he performed the stunt in a decade. During the stunt Karges bumped a curb.

"I felt rough," he admitted. "It's a little nerve-wracking."

He doesn't claim to possess supernatural powers, it's just the power of psychology, illusion, and intuition that Karges is all about.

"It's just a fun, interactive, audience-participation show that's not like anything you see," Karges said.

Karges will take the stage at the Alberta Bair Theater Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for "Experience the Extraordinary" are still available. Call the ABT ticket office at 406-256-6052 or visit albertabairtheater.org for more information.
