Annoying, stupid and unnecessary, yes, but racist?

I’m talking about the widely reported “abuse” experienced by an expat New Zealander and her English husband at Eden Park for the first rugby test between New Zealand and England. I write “abuse” not because I want to suggest it wasn’t an unpleasant and unnecessary experience but because I want to ask a broader question about the labels we use for what happens in the world around us.

Specifically, the husband in question was the subject of “feral racism”, including jeers of “[insert swear word here] whingeing Pom”, ...
