Looking into the mind of a cricketer

Chartered Psychologist Dr Jamie Barker from Staffordshire University will be speaking on the psychology of cricket at the Cheltenham Science Festival next week. He will be taking part in a session that also features the journalist and former England batsman Ed Smith.

Under the title ‘In the mind of a cricketer’, Dr Barker and Ed Smith will examine such questions as:

  • How does a cricketer stay on the ball after long hours or keep emotions in check after a bad decision?
  • How does an international cricket team come back after a dismal defeat like England suffered in Australia in the winter?

The session, which is sponsored by the British Psychological Society, will take place in the Pillar Room at Cheltenham Town Hall on Tuesday 3 June (6.30-7.30pm). You can find full details and book tickets via the Cheltenham Science Festival website.

Other BPS-sponsored sessions in the festival are:

  • ‘The psychology of war’ with our President Elect Professor Jamie Hacker Hughes and Captain Duncan Precious, the first clinical psychologist to be commissioned into the British Army.
  • ‘Why time flies’ with psychologist and broadcaster Claudia Hammond.
  • ‘The value of money’ with Professor Alan Lewis and Paul Lewis from BBC Radio 4’s ‘Money Box’.

With over 300 events promoting dialogue about the latest ideas in science and engineering, Cheltenham is recognised across the world as one of the most important platforms for science communication and public engagement.
