Mark Beitel, Ph.D., will give a presentation on "Smart Therapy for Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities and Related Psychological Issues" from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the Darien Public Library.

Children with learning differences are at greater risk for psychological problems, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, oppositionality, and conduct disorder according to Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities Inc., which sponsoring the talk. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is a scientifically tested, non-medication treatment method that can make a significant difference with lasting results, according to a release.

Beitel will discuss how research-based cognitive behavior therapy can help your child reduce symptoms of distress and improve functioning at home and at school. Current research evidence supporting CBT also will be reviewed. Practical information on seeking a provider, length of treatment, and outcomes will be presented as well. A question-and-answer session will follo the presentation.

Beitel is a licensed clinical psychologist, psychotherapy researcher and psychotherapist. He earned a bachelor's degree from the Psychology Honors Program at the University of Michigan, a master's degree from the New School for Social Research, and a doctoral degree in clinical psychology from Fordham University. He received clinical training at Bellevue Hospital Center, New York University Medical Center, and St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital. Beitel began his career at Yale as a full-time member of the psychiatry faculty and now serves part time as an assistant clinical professor. He also serves as an adjunct assistant professor of medical psychology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. He has published more than 25 scientific articles.
