KU student found dead in dorm

  • A University of Kansas student from Leavenworth was found dead in her dorm room Thursday, KU officials announced Friday.

Courtney Newman was a senior majoring in psychology and sociology, living in KU's Ellsworth Hall in her second year as a resident assistant. According to the university, she was also a member of Zeta Phi Beta and was expected to graduate in May.

“The KU Student Housing family lost a vibrant young woman who had an amazing future. Tragically, we will not see that future unfold. Our hearts go out to her family and friends, co-workers and the many lives she touched," said David Ekerdt, professor of sociology and director of the Gerontology Center.

The cause of Newman's death has yet to be released, pending a report from the medical examiner. Police, however, do not suspect foul play at this time.
