Keeping Employees Engaged

CHENNAI:Methods to improve employee engagement are needed more at this juncture, considering the number of people recently sacked by one of the software giants - Tata Consultancy Services, said David Jawahar, Registrar, University of Madras.

Speaking at the valedictory function of a three-day conference titled Enriching Employee Engagement in Organizations - Role of Psychology, he stressed on the importance of actively engaging employees, with respect to all sectors, especially IT.

Presenting results from a US-based research, he went on to say that, on an average, only 14 per cent of employees are actively engaged and the rest of the workforce becomes a burden to their employer. “Employees must be attracted, inspired and committed to their work for which the employers need to instill a sense of belonging in them. This can be achieved through psychology,” he added.

Devarajan H, vice chairman, University Grants Commission added that understanding psychology of employees helps  to delegate work accordingly.

He added that understanding the psychology doesn’t limit to employees alone and extends to students as well. “Student unrest in colleges these days is because they are not understood,” said Devaraj.
