Kean Ocean Forensic Psychology Club

The newest Kean Ocean student organization on the campus is the Kean Ocean Forensic Psychology Club.  Kim Payne, president of the Kean Ocean Forensic Psychology Club, began the process last semester to get the club up and running.  The whole process was longer than expected with the constitution being the most difficult part to handle, “But [with] the help from Jennifer [Weingart] and Leah [Savia], they made it possible for me to get everything submitted on time and correct anything that was wrong,” Payne stated.

Payne started this club while noticing the large increase in the amount of people who are becoming interested in the forensic psychology subject area. “The popularity of forensic psychology has grown phenomenally in recent years, partly due to sensationalized portrayals of the field in movies and television, which are not always accurate.” This club should appeal mostly to criminal justice and psychology majors, however, any student of Kean University that has an interest in forensic psychology or student involvement in general may join this club.

To clarify what forensic psychology is, Payne informs, “Forensic psychology involves applying psychology to the field of criminal investigation and the law.”  Students who are interested in this field should join the Kean Ocean Forensic Psychology Club to learn more about the subject and can help with the process of planning events around this subject with the club.”

Payne plans on creating events that will allow students to see what the life of a forensic psychologist is like.  “Forensic psychologists are often depicted as criminal profilers who are able to almost psychically deduce a killer’s next move.  In reality, these professionals practice psychology as a science within the criminal justice system and civil courts.”  The club will be fundraising to host events such as being able to have guest speakers, going to an autopsy, and hosting a murder mystery dinner.

The Kean Ocean Forensic Psychology Club meets every other Friday in the Kean Ocean Bartlett Building, room 209.  If any student wants to join this club, they can request membership via Cougar Link or email Payne at paynekim@kean.edu.
