POUGHKEEPSIE — The Hudson Valley Psychological Association has announced a call for nominations to honor individuals and organizations that have made significant efforts in the recent past to promote mental and emotional health in Ulster, Orange and Dutchess counties.

Applications may be downloaded from hvpa.org. Individuals, not-for-profit, for-profit, and governmental entities are eligible. A group of organizations working in collaboration with one another also are eligible. Deadline for completed applications is Jan. 20.

"In view of the many heartbreaking natural disasters and tragic events of violence in our communities around the nation, it is so refreshing and uplifting to focus on the helpers and the many forms of help available in our communities and to honor the many heroic efforts of individuals and organizations to make our communities healthy and safe," said Dr. David A. Crenshaw, HVPA president.

On June 8, HVPA will present these awards at a public event to be held at the FDR Presidential Home and Library in Hyde Park. Last year's event honored Luader Smith, founder of the House of Hope; Parkinson's Disease Support Group of the Mid-Hudson Valley; Hudson Valley Collaborative Divorce and Dispute Resolution Association; TEAM Newburgh; and the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office were honored for their remarkable accomplishments. A Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. David A. Crenshaw.

Founded in 1984, the Hudson Valley Psychological Association seeks to advance the profession of psychology and to serve New York's Hudson Valley community. Members of HVPA are psychologists who work in various settings including nonprofit agencies, community mental health clinics, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, college counseling centers, and private practice.

Members maintain the high standards of professional and ethical practice as mandated by licensure through the New York state Board of Education and by principles of the American Psychological Association and the New York State Psychological Association.
