International Conference on Health  Psychology begins at JU

JAMMU, Dec 6: First International Conference of Indian Academy on Health Psychology in collaboration with the Department of Psychology on the theme “Health Psychology: Emerging Trends and Challenges”, began today at the University of Jammu.
Prof G P Thakur, former president of Indian Academy of Applied Psychology, Indian Association of School Psychology, was chief guest on the occasion. He highlighted the significance of such events that address themselves to the issues of Health Psychology.
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma, in his presidential remarks, spoke on the contemporary relevance of the theme and the need to organize such events that, in their multidisciplinary approach, can come up with holistic solutions and bring out potential and hitherto unexplored research areas. He further said that such events provide a frame for an interaction of experts from diverse fields resulting in innovative and socially relevant research.
Dr G S Saun, Member Secretary, ICSSR, New Delhi, spoke of the inroads that psychology has been making in the domain of social sciences in the past few years.
Prof N K Chadha, president of  Indian Association of Positive Psychology, Delhi,  in his keynote address,  explicated the theme of the conference and highlighted the various aspects of Health Psychology. He spoke at length on the concerns of the old age and how psychological well being and health becomes a prime concern at the advanced stage of life. He also stressed the importance of taking policy decisions based on ground research to make such events more meaningful.
Prof Anand Kumar, president of Indian Association of Health Psychology, spoke of the contribution of IAHP in the promotion of health psychology at the interface of the academia and general public.  He spoke about health psychology and how it is an integral part of the complete well being of the individual.
Earlier,  Prof Arti Bakshi, HoD Psychology and Director, ICIAHP-2015,  informed that about 600 delegates from across the country and abroad, including  UK, Russia and  USA,   have come to participate in the conference.
Dr Chandra Shekhar, organizing secretary, ICIAHP-2015, presented the vote of thanks and Dr  Sarita Sood, Co-Organizing secretary conducted proceedings of the programme.
