Paul Cottman’s hand starts at the nervous dog’s chest. Gradually, he draws his hand — and the treat inside — toward his own body.

The dog hesitates. Skeptically, it moves closer to Cottman. Eventually 11-year-old boxer-mix Bungee builds enough trust with Cottman to push his muzzle into the trainer’s hand to retrieve the treat.
