History of Basketball Coaching and Psychology Explored in MEN FOR THE …

Renowned ophthalmologist, psychiatrist and author of "A Layman's Guide Where the Mind is in the Brain," Dr. Marious Kim Jack publishes a new book that is not only in line with his profession, but of his passion for sports. Men for the Season is a book about Hec Edmundson and Squinty Hunter, two notable player-coaches whose lives have been transformed by basketball, which, in turn, has not only shaped coaching and sports psychology, but also human psychology in general.

Clarence Sinclair "Hec" Edmundson was a two-time Olympian. He had a profound coaching impact on Washington athletics and he co-founded the state high school basketball tournament. Elra Lorn "Squinty" Hunter, on the other hand, was hailed as "the wizard of basketball courts." He is also "the most successful basketball coach in the history of the Lewis and Clark High School and athletic director for 39 years". The "Hec Edmundson Pavilion" and the "E. L. Squinty Hunter Field House" are hallmarks of their lasting legacy.

In the Introduction of Men for the Season, Jack states:

"Coaching technique is a modern sport's didactic that has its fair share of methods and theories exposed throughout its own special history. That takes into consideration the men who took part in its development... Only recently has coaching competitive sport been considered a mind game as well as a physical one... Hunter and Edmundson can be considered not just a part of sport history but also a step in man's psychological development."
