Heidi boosts business success by degrees

An entrepreneurial local businesswoman who was recognised in the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards has enrolled to study Psychology at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Heidi Gorell-Hay, 33, of Forest Glen is already a USC graduate, having completed a Bachelor of Communications, majoring in Public Relations and Event Management, in 2001.

She established Mirror Professional Development in 2011 and, for the past two years, has been a finalist in the Young Business Woman of the Year category of the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards.

Ms Gorell-Hay’s business helps people gain recognition for their prior learning and work experience as they strive towards diplomas in management and business.

“It’s definitely a niche market but my clients come from all over Australia and I can set my own hours and work from home,” she said.

Now married with two children, Ms Gorell-Hay said she is studying a Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) part-time to assist her in motivating clients and helping them set goals.

She said many of her clients were surprised that their skills could be formally recognised and contribute to a formal qualification.

“For some it’s about confidence,” she said. “Until they’ve spoken to me, some think that getting new qualifications and doing further study is something they can’t do.

“I advise anyone looking for a job that recent education looks great on your resume. My role is to help them get that qualification cheaper and easier than they thought possible, by having their professional experience count towards it.”
