University of Southern California researcher Wendy Wood will visit Penn State Behrend on April 18 at 7 p.m. to discuss how a woman's menstrual cycle influences her interest in a man.

"Menstrual Cycles, Hormones and Mate Preferences: Thoughts on Human Evolution," is the spring keynote address for the college's Colloquium Series in Psychological Sciences and Human Behavior.

The presentation will be held in the second-floor auditorium of Behrend's Reed Union Building.

Wood is USC's provost professor of psychology and business. She is a fellow of both the American Psychological Association and American Psychological Society.

Autism workshops planned

The Achievement Center, 101 E. Sixth St., is hosting a series of workshops for the parents of children with autism.

The workshops are held Tuesdays in April at 7 p.m. Topics include potty training, sleep issues and feeding issues.

Experts will facilitate a discussion about each issue and provide effective interventions to address problems.

Auschwitz survivor to speak

Holocaust survivor Eva Mozes Kor will talk about the power of the human spirit April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Hirt Auditorium, 160 E. Front St.

Kor, a survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp and Dr. Josef Mengele's infamous experiments, works as an advocate for her fellow Holocaust survivors. She is the founder of Children of Auschwitz Nazi Deadly Lab Experiments Survivors.

The talk is sponsored by UPMC Hamot and is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.

 

Gastroenterologist honored

Saint Vincent Health System honored Paul Gmuer, M.D., during the hospital's annual Doctors Day luncheon April 3.

Gmuer, a gastroenterologist with Digestive Diseases of Northwest Pennsylvania, retired in 2011 after serving on Saint Vincent's staff for 27 years. He served for a number of years as Saint Vincent's chief of gastroenterology.

Gmuer earned his medical degree from SUNY Brooklyn. He completed his internal medicine residency at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worchester, Mass., and gastroenterology training at the University of Massachusetts.

He has been a member of the Pennsylvania and Erie County medical societies, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association.
