Hayner earns degree in psychology

NEW LONDON, N.H. Courtney Hayner of Greenfield Center graduated from Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire, in May 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Clements named to Cornell dean’s list

ITHACA Timothy Clements, son of Bruce and Polly Clements of Saratoga Springs, earned dean’s list honors for the spring 2014 semester at the College of Engineering at Cornell University in Ithaca.

Clements is a math/geoscience major.

Students named to the dean’s list have achieved a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while enrolled for 12 or more credits for a letter grade.

Feder honored for academic excellence

BRUNSWICK, Maine Bowdoin College held its annual Sarah and James Bowdoin Day ceremony Oct. 31 to honor undergraduates who have distinguished themselves by excellence in scholarship.

Among the Sarah and James Bowdoin scholars was Demi Feder of Malta, New York. She is a member of Bowdoin College’s class of 2017, and her major is undeclared.

Students who are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Scholars are in the top 20 percent of each class with the highest grade-point average for the previous academic year. In addition, scholars who earned a GPA of 4.0 are designated Sarah and James Bowdoin Book Award winners.

Crandall inducted into math honor society

CANTON Caroline A. Crandall of Saratoga Springs has been selected for membership in the St. Lawrence University chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, the national mathematics honorary society.

Crandall is majoring in mathematics and attended Saratoga Springs Senior High School. She is a member of the class of 2016 at St. Lawrence.

Membership eligibility for Pi Mu Epsilon varies by class year, but all students must have taken a qualifying number of mathematics courses and have achieved minimum grade-point averages in those courses, as well as overall, depending upon one’s seniority.

Ferlo to perform in SUNY Potsdam opera

POTSDAM Students at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music will have the opportunity to premiere the three winning operatic works of the Domenic J. Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize.

The student cast and crew will be able to meet the composers and librettists of the three winning works, “A Letter to East 11th Street,” “In a Mirror, Darkly,” and “The Fox and the Pomegranate.”

The cast and crew includes Heather Ferlo of Ballston Spa, who plays the role of Susan Bollinger in the opera “A Letter to East 11th Street.”

Performances will be help at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, to Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater at The Crane School of Music.

The Crane Opera Ensemble has twice been named the first place winner of the American Prize in Operatic Performance and has placed second in the National Opera Association’s Collegiate Production Competition.

Silver awarded scholarship

CASTINE, Maine Maine Maritime Academy’s annual Celebration of Achievement was held Nov. 6 to honor the scholarly accomplishments of students and the service of faculty and alumni.

To express their regard for Maine Maritime Academy as an international leader in maritime technical education, the school’s American Bureau of Shipping awarded scholarships to outstanding MMA marine systems engineering students in 2014, including Saratoga Springs resident William Silver.

The ABS mission is to promote the security of life, property and the marine environment, primarily through the establishment and verification of technical and engineering standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of ships and marine-related facilities.
