Hastings College Alum Named Head of Sports Psychology at UNL

A former Hastings College quarterback has been named the Director of Sports Psychology at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

The department says Dr. Todd Stull will work with the more than 600 student-athletes competing in the school's 24 varsity sports. Stull says he's looking forward to the opportunities afforded to the university.

"I think probably some of the things that stand out would be No. 1, to address the mental health needs and the stressors that a lot of student-athletes face. I'm also looking forward to the opportunity to collaborate with everyone from the training staff to strength and conditioning to life skills and academic folks. The third thing would be to really enhance the mental skills training," he said.

In 2010, Stull founded Inside Performance Mindroom, a private practice that combines performance psychiatry with sport science training to enhance individual, team and coaching performance. Stull becomes the university's first full-time psychiatrist and says the school is following the lead from the NCAA addressing a critical need for student-athletes.

"At the top of the list was the feeling of being overwhelmed and the mental and emotional well-being. The NCAA has positioned itself to address the issue but also put out some guidelines to meet the need. The University of Nebraska has been very proactive and trying to stay ahead of things," he said.

Stull attended Hastings College from 1982 to 1986 where he received his Bachelor's degree and was a letterman for the football science club and psychology club. He received his doctorate in medicine from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1992.
