Graham Allen MP to speak on early intervention at child psychology conference

A Labour MP invited by David Cameron to chair an independent review of early intervention is speaking at a Society conference on Wednesday.

Graham Allen is speaking on ‘Early intervention: The next steps” at the Annual Conference of our Division of Clinical Psychology’s Faculty for Children and Young People at the Palace Hotel in Manchester

Mr Allen has represented the constituency of Nottingham North since 1987. Since entering Parliament he has held a variety of front-bench positions and specialised in developing policy. Described as ‘very independent minded’ by No. 10, he proved it by organising the two biggest parliamentary rebellions within a governing party in British political history as part of the campaign against the war in Iraq.

Unusually for an MP, in 2001 he chaired his city's local strategic partnership, which he renamed One Nottingham, and set about delivering the goal of making Nottingham the UK’s first ‘early intervention city’. He reflected on his experiences when co-authoring Early Intervention: Good Parents, Great Kids, Better Citizens with Iain Duncan-Smith in 2008.

It was his commitment to early intervention that led the Prime Minister, in June 2010, to request he Chair an Independent Review of Early Intervention. His second report to the government, Early Intervention: Smart Investment, Massive Savings was published in July 2011. He is now leading the movement to create an independent Early intervention Foundation.

We hope to live tweet his address to the conference on the Society Twitter account - look for the hashtag #CYPconf.
