VISAKHAPATNAM : The Department of Applied Psychology in GITAM University is offering MSc Applied Psychology from the Academic year 2015-16 through GITAM Institute of Management (GIM).

GIM Principal K Sivaramakrishna informed that the main objective of the course was to prepare the students for a career in psychology which focuses on varied aspects of psychology like health and related issues, positive psychology, clinical psychology, Indian and indigenous psychology and human resource development and management.

The curriculum lays the foundation for a conceptual and analytical understanding of the applied aspects of psychology. The course also prepares the students for a research career and helps in preparing for civil services as well as a psychologist which is a healing profession, Sivaramakrishna said.

The syllabus has recently undergone a major reorganisation, in accordance with the UGC guidelines, incorporating choice based credit system with a varied choice of elective courses, he added.

A professional training in the behavioural sciences, particularly in the subject of Applied Psychology with its varied branches, helps an individual tremendously in terms of self growth, good career opportunities, in educational, clinical or organisational fields or in research, he informed.

The principal briefed that the career opportunities for postgraduates in psychology range from a school or a college counsellor to a psychological counsellor in mental health clinics and in general hospitals. He further said that psychology postgraduates could take up research positions and teaching at graduate and post graduate levels and also as HR professionals in organisations and be a part of recruitment teams. Of late, there has been a tremendous upsurge of sports psychologists and forensic psychology experts as well Sivaramakrishna explained.

Eligibility

The Eligibility for the course is any bachelor’s degree, except Bachelor in Fine Arts, with a minimum of 50 percent marks.
