New research is hoping to help with the future assessment of depression in children.

Binghamton University Psychology Professor, Brandon Gibb conducted a study which he says can help predict the depression risk in kids all based on pupil response. Gibb says depending on how much a child's pupil dilates when seeing an emotional image doctors can predict their risk of depression over the next two years.

Gibb said, " People say that the eyes are the window of the soul. Well it's also a window on the brain and so what we were interested in is seeing can we look at these really subtle fluctuations in how much our pupil dilates and see how you're processing emotional information."

Gibb says he thinks this line of research could eventually lead to universal screenings in pediatricians' offices.
