The Department of Counselling, Welfare, Training and Placement, NMAM Institute of Technology (NMAMIT), will be organising a four-day workshop on ‘Introduction to therapeutic counselling for engineering teachers’ on its premises at Nitte, Udupi district, from July 13.

In a press release here on Friday, Shalini K. Sharma, head of the Department of Counselling, Welfare, Training and Placement, NMAMIT, said acquainting teachers with the needs of adolescents, their psychology, early detection of problems and intervention in a sensitive and professional manner, was a feasible, cost-effective way to maximise growth in the youngsters.

It invariably helped them to deal with the challenges in their personal and academic life, which if ignored, would have resulted in waste of time, money and health. This need was particularly acute in engineering colleges because of the large number of students entering them.

The workshop would have a proactive approach to effectively deal with student issues, especially for teachers of professional colleges, who come with no training in student psychology or teaching-learning styles or common psychiatric disorders among young people.

Malavika Kapur, professor of Clinical Psychology, visiting professor, National Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS), IISc., Bengaluru, who is also daughter of Jnanpith award winner late Kota Shivaram Karanth, would be the chief guest and deliver the keynote address on ‘Soft skills in counselling’ during the inaugural session at 9.30 a.m. on July 13.
