Former Society President receives DBE in Birthday Honours list

Professor Vicki Bruce from Newcastle University has been made a Dame for services to higher education and psychology in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Known for her work on human face perception and person memory, including face recognition and recall by eyewitnesses and other aspects of social cognition, Professor Bruce is an Honorary Fellow of the British Psychological Society.

She served as President of the Society in 2001-2, and has won our Presidents’ Award, our Book Award and our Cognitive Psychology Section Award. She was made an OBE in 1997.

Three other Society members have been honoured in the new list.

Dr Carol McGowan received an OBE for services to armed forces personnel and Dr Janet Carr received the same award for services to people with Down’s syndrome and their families. Emma Cravitz received an MBE for services to children and families, particularly in London.

Another psychologist honoured in the Birthday list is Professor Emeritus Roy McConkey from the University of Ulster, who received an OBE for services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Two other awards may be of interest to Society members.  Professor Judith Cross, a neuroscientist at the UCL Institute of Child Health, received the CBE, as did Professor Jonathan Nicholl, who chaired the public health, health services and primary care sub-panel  in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.
