Explaining psychology over the airwaves

Psychology FM, the series of radio programmes being broadcast by the Manchester station ALL FM, continues to flourish.

Supported by a public engagement grant from the Society, these shows have been put together by Professor Rebecca Lawthorn and PhD student Michael Richards from Manchester Metropolitan University.

They chart the evolution of psychology while shedding light on its modern incarnations, and aim to change people’s perceptions of men with disabilities as the presenters will all have learning difficulties.

The most recent programme, broadcast on Wednesday 5 March, looked at what we mean when we say 'counselling psychology' or 'clinical psychology'.

Michael Richards told us:

“These are complex areas of psychology, but we were able to capture our take on what it means to us by talking about our own experiences of counselling and clinical settings. We interviewed a counselling psychologist, Julia Robinson, from Manchester Metropolitan University and explored her perspectives on what counselling psychology means. The show is really interesting and truly captures the essence of what counselling and clinical psychology means to these men.”

The next Psychology FM broadcast, which will look at health psychology and sports and exercise psychology, goes out at 11am on Wednesday 19 March. You can find the full schedule on this website.
