Experts: Effects of Floods, Rains Cause Psychological Trauma

Khartoum - Experts and specialists agreed that the negative effects of the floods and rains that hit many of the different states of the Sudan, can infect affected by what they called psychological trauma, if there is no scientific intervention through psychological support programmes.
Professor of Psychology at the University of Khartoum, Professor Abdul Bagi Dafallah said that crisis and disaster cause psychological damage to human beings, and can cause psychological shock if there is no quick response through psychological intervention, and shelter and in-kind support. He pointed out that mental disorders to those affected by the floods and rain can occur after a period of time, even children, who viewed the deaths due to floods or destroyed homes may be affected by it.
"Post-traumatic growth needs positive psychological work based on a systematic structure," Dafallah said.
On his part, the Deputy Director of the Refugees and Disasters Studies Institute, Dr.  Khalid Abu Reida said that a crisis is a sudden imbalance leading to unstable conditions, while the natural disaster requires external intervention. He pointed out that a disaster passes through several stages, starting by signs, and up to the summit, which needs to be handled seriously, adding, "There is no world free of disasters, and gap should be filled through internal and external support."
