The number of children taking medication for ADHD has tripled since the mid 1990s, and many experts think that there's good reason for it. Doctor Amy Damashek, a Western Michigan University assistant professor of psychology, says that a greater awareness of attention disorders has naturally led to more people getting treatment. She says that the drugs used to treat ADHD do work...when used properly:
However, Damashek says that ADHD drugs can have harmful side effects, like as interfering with sleep, causing panic disorders, and stunting growth. He advises that a combination of drugs and behavioral therapy be used to treat attention related conditions.
