Expert evaluates psychological effects of 2 mass shootings

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Two mass shootings in one week - the Tuscaloosa bar shooting and Aurora, Colo., theater massacre - have left many Americans on edge and wondering if there is anywhere people can go and be completely safe.

Clinical Psychologist Dr. Roger Rinn said Friday people have to keep the situation in perspective.

"You've got to look at the probability and say, what is the probability that no matter where I live, this would be an episode in my life that I would have to run in fear of my life; and the answer is very, very likely," he said.

Rinn said the passage of time will also help ease nervousness; since the shootings just happened, they are fresh on every one's minds. Rinn said in general, people remember these events, but they don't remember them emotionally.

He said six months from now, the average person will not be thinking about the shootings.
