EPSY Faculty Awarded Distinguished APA Awards

Dr. Bruce Thompson, distinguished professor in the department of Educational Psychology, and Dr. Cecil Reynolds, former professor in the department of Educational Psychology, have been chosen to receive Distinguished Contribution Awards this year on behalf of the American Psychological Association (APA).

The American Psychological Association recognizes and presents Distinguished Contribution Awards to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring within the Division 5 fields of assessment, evaluation, measurement, research methods and/or statistics. APA is the largest scientific and professional organization representing psychology in the United States and has the largest association of psychologists with nearly 130,000 members. The APA vision is to create, communicate and apply psychological knowledge to benefit society through research findings, ethics and educational achievement.

Dr. Thompson was selected to receive the Jacob Cohen Award in the category of Distinguished Contributions to Teaching and Mentoring.  In order to be considered for the Jacob Cohen Award, individuals must submit a nomination letter and two other letters of support that describe distinguished teaching and mentoring through teaching evaluations, awards or testimonials. The nominee’s impact on students, and their involvement in workshops, conference presentations, web sites and public media are also strongly considered.

Dr. Reynolds was selected to receive the Samuel J. Messick Award in the category of Distinguished Scientific Contributions. In order to be considered for the Samuel J. Messick Award, individuals must have a long and distinguished history of scientific contributions to areas related to Division 5, and must present a nomination letter and two other letters of support that describe the relevance, magnitude and scope of those contributions.

Dr. Thompson and Dr. Reynolds were presented with their awards at the annual Division 5 Award Symposium at the Annual Convention of American Psychological Association on August 7th, 2014.
