EMU’s clinical psychology doctoral program ranked 30th out of 50

Eastern Michigan University's clinical psychology doctoral program has been ranked 30th out of 50 in the latest list put together by bestcounselingdegrees.net. The only other Michigan college found on the list, the University of Michigan, was ranked 47th.

According to a press release from EMU's University Communications, Best Counseling took a list of the American Psychological Association, internships, and pass rates from the Professional Practice of Psychology exam.

"What makes our program so great is the faculty," Department head Carol Freedman-Doan said in the press release. "... that we were ranked 30th indicates we are in the top 10 percent nationally."

EMU's clinical psychology doctorate requires students to pick one of 5 specializations; adult psychopathology, applied behavior analysis, assessment, developmental psychology, or health.

According to bestcouncselingdegrees.net, 84.71% of EMU students obtained an internship and a 90% licensure rate. The program also has a 100% pass rate for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.

There are 379 psychological doctorate programs in the US. Founded in 2001, Eastern's program has 32 doctoral students-in-residents and 8 students in dissertation, according to the press release.

Eastern was also praised in a fairly recent article in the academic journal Training Education in Professional Psychology. EMU ranked first out of 10 in the internship matching rate; beating schools such as Michigan State and Georgia State. EMU came 7th in the journals calculations for "emerging professional benchmarks combined."

"The purpose of the doctoral program is to graduate license-eligible clinical psychologists with state-of-the art knowledge relating to the psychological practice of assessment, therapy, research and program development and evaluation," stated the department on their clinical psychology page
