Psychologist, author and TV pioneer Dr. Joyce Brothers
passed away
yesterday of respiratory failure. She was 85.

Brothers earned her Ph.D in psychology from Columbia University.
She rose to national fame in the mid-1950s with her appearances
on The $64,000 Question in which she demonstrated an
encyclopedic knowledge of boxing. When the show came under scandal
later, it was proven that Brothers’ knowledge was on the up and
up.

Her stint on The $64,000 Question led to her
own TV series, a syndicated newspaper column and a monthly column
in Good Housekeeping.

Dr. Brothers was a regular guest on The Tonight Show
with Johnny Carson
and made appearances on shows such
as The Love Boat, WKRP in Cincinnati, Happy Days, Married
with Children, Baywatch
and The Larry Sanders
Show
to name but a few. My two favorite Joyce Brothers
cameos were when she shared a hot
tub
with Eddie Murphy on SNL and when she shared the broadcast
booth with Mel Allen, Dick Enberg, Dick Vitale, Curt Gowdy and Tim
McCarver in The Naked Gun.

I leave you with Dr. Brothers answering the
$64,000 question and earning a knockout.
