A Tesco worker from Dagenham who balanced business and psychology studies around her job has scooped a top prize in a national industry awards ceremony.

Claire Morrissy, deputy distribution centre manager for the supermarket chain, won the Warehousing category at the 2014 Freight Transport Association everywoman in Transport and Logistics Awards.

After joining the company in 2004 she has risen through the ranks, and her recent involvement in the Dagenham site launch has seen it hailed as the one of the best distribution centre openings.

Claire has also balanced studies for an MBA and Postgraduate certificate in Psychology around her full-time job, and is delighted to have her hard work credited.

She said: “I am thrilled to win this award and receive recognition for my achievements from the Transport and Logistics industry.

“It was a thoroughly enjoyable day, meeting so many other women from different companies who have similar careers and experiences,

“The awards event itself did a fantastic job of celebrating the achievements of all the finalists.”

The awards programme was launched seven years ago to raise awareness of the varied and rewarding careers that the transport and logistics sector offers with the ambition to increase the number of women considering it as a career choice.

Maxine Benson MBE, co-founder of everywoman, said: “As the transport and logistics industry seeks to employ half a million more people, it has never been more urgent to ensure the sector attracts more talented women.

“Inspirational female role models enjoying rewarding careers and achieving success will do that.

“That’s why today’s winners are so vitally important to the industry. We congratulate them all.”
